A second cable (at the left) is used to support the connector underneath so it remains flat and parallel while soldering. Both cables a taped with sellotape to a flat surface. Only the FFC connector pins are lightly tinned with solder beforehand. Adding extra solder would cause adjacent contacts to bridge together.
